Biggest speculated changes for the iPhone 15 Ultra vs. the iPhone 14 Pro Max

  • In spite of the fact that the iPhone 15 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max may appear to be identical up close, the Ultra should have a new, curvier design with titanium side rails.
  • On the Ultra, the mute switch from the iPhone 14 Pro Max might be replaced by an Action button.
  • When compared to the A16 silicon used in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the new A17 Bionic chipset should dramatically enhance the power of the iPhone 15 Ultra.
  • The iPhone 15 Ultra's zoom could be increased to 6x with a periscope telephoto camera. The 3x-capable iPhone 14 Pro Max is capable.
  • The USB-C port on the iPhone 15 Ultra could replace the Lightning charging port on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, enabling faster charging and data transfer.
Given that Apple is ready to reveal a new batch of iPhones, a comparison between the iPhone 15 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max is very intriguing right now. We may have to wait another two weeks or so for the Apple September event, but we already have a good sense of how these two phones might compare.

According to rumors, the iPhone 15 Ultra will replace the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the flagship model in the iPhone line. There will still be commonalities between the phones despite the fact that several upgrades have been predicted in comparison to what we saw on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is now ranked second on our list of the finest smartphones. If the rumours we've heard so far are accurate, the iPhone 15 Ultra should replace, if not completely dethrone, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra as the greatest phone available.

IPHONE 15 ULTRA VS. IPHONE 14 PRO MAX: PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

The iPhone 15 Ultra isn't currently available for purchase, but it's likely to make an appearance at the Apple "Wonderlust" Event on September 12 before going on sale ten days later, on September 22. (Again, if Apple abandons the iPhone 15 Pro Max moniker.)

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is now available for purchase, however once the next generation of Pro iPhones becomes available, it will most likely soon be gone from Apple's shelves. The existing model will still be available, hopefully at a discount, from wireless carriers and other stores.

The starting price for the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,099/£1,199. According to some sources, the iPhone 15 Ultra may cost up to $200 more, suggesting that purchasing the older iPhone 14 Pro Max may still be financially advantageous even though it isn't the most recent model.

IPHONE 15 ULTRA VS. IPHONE 14 PRO MAX: DESIGN

The iPhone 14 Pro Max resembles any other iPhone from the last three years save from its Dynamic Island notch. (Okay, so it's not the iPhone SE, but you get the idea.) With a more rounded form, narrower display bezels, and titanium side rails in place of stainless steel, the iPhone 15 Ultra could change that. These features should make the phone lighter and possibly more comfortable to handle without compromising robustness.

Where the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a straightforward mute switch, the iPhone 15 Ultra may include a brand-new Action button. The Action button can be configured to carry out many actions like opening a certain app, turning on the flashlight, or leaving a voice note, but according to code discovered in iOS 17, it appears to be able to mute and unmute the phone.

The iPhone 15 Ultra should have a USB-C port like the other new models in the series, allowing Apple to beat EU regulations requiring all businesses to use it by 2024. This will require using a different connector than the iPhone 14 Pro Max's Lightning port to charge your device or transfer data, but if you have the appropriate cable (possibly one that has Apple-specific approval like you currently get with Made for iPhone accessories), things should power up and send faster with the new port.

The iPhone 15 Ultra will reportedly come in a variety of hues, including a new trademark blue shade, titanium gray, silver, and space gray. A somewhat different combination of Silver, Space Black, Gold (presumably replaced by the new titanium gray option), and Deep Purple was available for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, sources indicate that Deep Purple will be replaced by the new blue as this year's "hero" hue.

IPHONE 15 ULTRA VS. IPHONE 14 PRO MAX: DISPLAY

We don't expect to see changes to the size, resolution or refresh rate of the iPhone 15 Ultra's display compared to what the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers. But it's possible the new model will be significantly brighter, with an alleged brightness rating of 2,500 nits, compared to the 2,000 nits Apple claims the iPhone 14 Pro Max is capable of.

IPHONE 15 ULTRA VS. IPHONE 14 PRO MAX: CAMERAS

The majority of the cameras on the iPhone 15 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max are likely to be shared. On the rear of the phone, there is a 48MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP TrueDepth camera.

A periscope telephoto camera, which could offer a higher zoom level (possibly up to 6x magnification or even 10x magnification) than the iPhone 14 Pro Max's current 3x digital zoom, will reportedly be new to the Ultra.

Like the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Ultra could also be in line to get a larger main sensor that's capable of capturing more light. The result should be brighter pictures than you get with the current iPhone 14 Pro models.

We'd expect a new photo or video capture feature or two to be added to the iPhone 15 series alongside the updated hardware of the iPhone 15 Ultra, as Apple tends to do with every new iPhone generation. However, these rarely leak in advance of launch day, so we are just making an educated guess for the moment.

IPHONE 15 ULTRA VS. IPHONE 14 PRO MAX: PERFORMANCE

Apple should be updating the iPhone 14 Pro Max's A16 Bionic chip for a new A17 Bionic chipset in the iPhone 15 Ultra. The new silicon is expected to use a 3-nanometer process for improved power and efficiency.

Alleged A17 Bionic benchmarks show a nice big leap in performance for the iPhone 15 Pro over the iPhone 14 Pro, which we imagine would apply to the iPhone 15 Ultra too.

The expected price increase for the iPhone 15 Ultra could mean more on-board storage with Apple offering 256GB as the default capacity for the Ultra. Like  other iPhones, the iPhone 14 Pro Max featured 128GB in its base model. There's also talk of a 2TB version option, offering double the storage of the highest-capacity 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 Ultra will most likely run iOS 17 out of the box, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be able to upgrade to it around the same time as the iPhone 15 models arrive, assuming Apple keeps to its traditional timing. But as the newer phone, we'd expect the iPhone 15 Ultra will end up getting one or two extra years of updates over the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
